The annual cost of asthma and COPD on the NHS is estimated as £3 billion and £1.9 billion respectively. In total, all lung conditions (including lung cancer) directly cost the NHS in the UK £11 billion annually. In the NHS Long Term Plan, respiratory disease is identified as a clinical priority to improve treatment and support for people with respiratory disease.

Respiratory diseases are also a major factor in winter pressures faced by the NHS; most respiratory admissions are non-elective and during the winter period these double in number.

Our Respiratory Therapy – Equipment and Consumables Framework Agreement covers the treatment of sleep apnoea, provision of non-invasive ventilation and to assist patients with mucus clearance. All the goods and services provided support the diagnosis and ongoing treatment of the patient throughout their therapy care pathway from the trust’s premises to the patients’ home to support the NHSE 2024/25 priorities and operational planning guidance of implementing virtual wards. The framework agreement also includes the long-term observations and compliance reporting of the patient.

While home delivery services will ensure that patients receive their necessary respiratory therapy consumables directly at home, enhancing convenience and compliance with treatment plans. This service helps maintain continuity of care and improves patient outcomes.

The products and services provided help patients self-manage their respiratory disease, which can help prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.
