The UK government estate includes over 450,000 public buildings across England and Wales, ranging from hospitals and schools to courts, prisons, and council offices. As of October 2024, the maintenance backlog across government properties reached £49 billion, with the Ministry of Defence, NHS, and school estates accounting for 89% of the estate by area and 84% by value.
Data from NHS Digital’s 2023/24 Estates Return Information Collection shows that the cost to eradicate backlog maintenance has risen to £13.8 billion, more than the £13.6 billion total cost of running the entire NHS estate. Maintaining a safe environment in healthcare settings, from infection control, through to the maintenance and upkeep of medical facilities and equipment, has a direct impact on patient safety and care, as well as the wellbeing of the NHS workforce
Our Hard Facilities Management (Hard FM 2) Framework Agreement can help maintain the internal and external physical assets of your buildings, ensuring they provide a safe environment for the patients, visitors and staff that enter the buildings daily, improving the patient pathway. It includes reactive maintenance, space reconfiguration and infection-control upgrades and seamlessly supports digital transformation by covering computer-aided facilities management (CAFM) and building management systems (BMS) to ensure the smooth running of buildings.
