The NHS aims to achieve net-zero supply chain emissions by 2045. As part of this goal, all NHS organisations must develop green plans outlining key actions to reduce emissions and enhance climate resilience.
Supply chain and procurement are key focus areas, with priority actions to embed circular solutions and encourage suppliers to go beyond minimum requirements. However, given the NHS’s large and complex supply chain, engaging with all suppliers on these actions can be complicated and time-consuming.
BSW ICS recognised this challenge. With 4,179 suppliers contributing to its overall supply chain footprint, BSW ICS needed to baseline their supply chain emissions to effectively address the priority actions and determine where trusts could collaborate to reduce emissions.

“The review by NHS SBS has created a “spring board” upon which we can build our strategy to reduce carbon emissions, through the identification of key suppliers to work with.”

NHS SBS used its automated data analytical tool to review BSW ICSs finance data and extract procurement spend data across all three of its Trusts, analysing a total of 4,179 in-scope suppliers across its supply chain.
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the global standard for organisations measuring and managing their emissions, recommends that organisations focus their engagement efforts on the suppliers responsible for the top 80% of their total supply chain footprint.
Our spend-based analysis revealed that 132 suppliers accounted for 80% of BSW ICSs supply chain footprint, a significantly more manageable figure compared to the original 4,179 suppliers initially in scope.
NHS SBS provided BSW ICS with:
- A verified reportable emissions figure (tCO2e) for the ICS and each individual Trust, including emissions per supplier. The ICS and Trusts can report on these figures, and use them as a benchmark to measure scope 3.1 emissions progress
- A detailed report that included actionable insights, so BSW ICS could focus on the suppliers that would result in the biggest emission reduction. It also highlighted where Trusts could collaborate on reduction initiatives, optimising resource and reducing duplication of effort
